Tutor

Position Summary

Tutors support 8th-12th grade students through weekly tutoring and mentoring. They provide consistent academic and social-emotional support to students with guidance from program staff. Tutors must enjoy building trusting relationships with students and serve as positive role models.

Tutors are also invited to join for special events like dinner and speech nights. Tutors have the option to assist program staff with lessons as needed and to lead community building activities in their classrooms.

Commitment

  • Two-to-three hours a week, on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday
  • Length of volunteer service is a minimum of one semester

Expectations

  • Weekly attendance on designated program night (Tue., Wed. or Thurs.)
  • Monthly attendance at Tutor Check-Ins
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the program site and be willing to find alternative transportation if needed
  • Support studentsโ€™ academic, personal and career development goals
  • Support program staff in maintaining a positive environment that encourages studying
  • Be open to mentoring and building age-appropriate relationships with students
  • Inform program staff and/or the Volunteer Manager in a timely manner when a student requires additional support or resources
  • Maintain regular communication with the Volunteer Manager and program staff regarding attendance and absences (three or fewer per semester)

Requirements

  1. Must be at least 18 years old
  2. Must be able to pass a Live Scan background check prior to tutoring
  3. Must submit proof of a negative TB (tuberculosis) test
  4. Complete required training and consistently uphold Reality Changersโ€™ values, policies and procedures
  5. This position may require moderate to rigorous physical activity, including, but not limited to: running, walking, standing and sitting for more than 30 minutes at a time, and lifting, carrying, or moving around objects up to 25lbs.
