We hope everyone had an amazing summer! It was another exciting summer at Reality Changers. We laughed, learned, hiked, camped, and so much more. Here’s a recap of it all:
Every summer, Reality Changers students who earn a 3.5 GPA or higher have the opportunity to attend UC San Diego’s Academic Connections, a 3-week residential program where high school students get to live on UC San Diego’s campus and take classes for college credit. This year, over 50 Reality Changers students were joined by 14 students from Mexico to participate in Academic Connections at UC San Diego. They took classes on a variety of subjects such as Media Matters: Stereotypes and Social Change in Popular Media, Introduction to Fluid Mechanical Engineering: From a Straw to an Airplane, and Critical Thinking. Additionally, 10 students participated in Academic Connections in Arizona, and 9 students participated in the first-ever Academic Connections in Mexico.
Summer program took place every Tuesday for all College Town students. These events are intentionally held away from Reality Changers headquarters. With the goal to provide fun and foster strong and healthy relationship between students, staff, and tutors. Our theme this year was “An RC State of Mind,” inspired by the common phrase, “A New York State of Mind.” Students often abbreviate Reality Changers to RC. We started the summer with our traditional Beach BBQ at La Jolla Shores. We also hiked Twin Peaks Mountain, played Olympian-style games at Powerhouse Park, and created a mural at Art Park @ Chollas Park. We ended the summer with our traditional ferry ride to Coronado. At this event, students received superlatives or “star awards” from their camp counselors. These awards recognize their unique character and attributes.
Staff Lunch and Learn Series
One of our core values at Reality Changers is Continuous Learning. This summer, staff lead Lunch & Learn workshop sharing their skills and talents. The topics included trauma-informed care, group facilitation, community resources, cake decorating, and much more!
Alumni Summer Reunion
A lot of fun was had at this year’s Alumni Summer Reunion at Playa Pacifica on Saturday, August 4th. We had over 40 alumni, friends and family in attendance and had a great afternoon at the beach with great company, tacos, a pinata, and games. We look forward to seeing everyone again at our alumni at our winter reunion!
Transfer 101 Workshop
The Alumni Network held our first Transfer 101 workshop July where students learned about their community college transfer options and requirements. The Alumni Network will continue to offer these workshops to continue to support our community college students this fall.
Summer Writing Workshops
For the first time, College Apps Academy Instructors offered 2-day personal statement writing workshops to rising seniors who wanted to get a head start on the college application process.
This year’s theme at Leadership Camp was “Changing Things!” And it fit well with the ways that camp has grown and evolved. The week before school starts, we take our students to the San Bernardino mountains for a weekend. Student received inspirational messages, leadership training, and more. Forest Home Leadership Camp is a tradition since 2001. At camp students begin to build relationships with their peers and staff who become their support system throughout the year.
We were excited to welcome SEEDS Training and May We Give 4 Love (MWG4L) at camp this year! SEEDS led our students in conversations about image, leadership, and community. May We Give 4 Love’s “Swing for Scholarships” golf tournament in June helped raise $7,000 to fund several campers this year and their members even joined us at camp! Thank you SEEDS and May We Give 4 Love for your support and friendship!
