Community Service, Monthly Report, January Issue

“Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

After a long-awaited break, we are back in the swing of community service weekends! Since the start of the academic year, students have accumulated a total of 1,427 hours. This month, hours were completed in partnership with Spring Valley Library, Alliance San Diego, Ronald McDonald House, San Diego River Park Foundation, and Traveling Stories!

This year we partnered with Spring Valley Library in a Book-to-Action grant. Branch Manager, Melissa Solis, proposed a 6-month service learning project for our students. Students learn about civic action within San Diego. Our book of choice is Kate Schatz’s Rad American Women A-Z. We kicked off the month taking action through literature and self-care. Students took a tour of the library, learned about 3-D printing, and mental health practices.

The next day, we partnered with Alliance San Diego to assist with their All Peoples’ Celebration in downtown. In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service, Reality Changers students and staff worked together to honor Dr. King because we believe that all people are created equal and all are part of the human family. This event brought over 1,000 people across San Diego to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King.

The following weekend students participated in back-to-back community service events with Traveling Stories, San Diego River Park Foundation, and Ronald McDonald House – huge props to the students who rocked multiple community service events in one day! At Traveling Stories, we helped young children outsmart poverty by reading together at the City Heights Farmers’ Market. That same morning, students cleaned up pounds of trash and debris in the San Diego River, then finished the day at Ronald McDonald House, baking sweets and treats for over 1,200 families of children battling life-threatening illnesses. Students learned quick and fun recipes in Ronald McDonald’s state-of-the-art kitchen, and learned about the impactful work they are doing for families in need.
